"Beverly Fishman’s paintings look good enough to eat. Comprising groups of geometric forms in vivid, contrasting colors—from a calming periwinkle blue to an arresting neon yellow—they seem purpose built for seduction. It is only after reading their parenthetical titles, such as Untitled (Migraine, ADHD, Pain, Pain) and Untitled (Abortion, Chronic Pain, Panic Disorder, Narcolepsy), that viewers notice that something is amiss. Each shape, they soon come to realize, corresponds to a different medical product—creating a complex portrait of a nation under the thrall of Big Pharma."

"In this new series, the artist continues her interest in what she calls the 'epidemic of polypharmacy,' which refers to the concurrent—and potentially disastrous—use of multiple medications by one individual. 'The question is how do these things work together in our system,' Fishman explains, “and the truth is that most of the time they don’t.'"

"As is common in the artist’s practice, the colors of the seven pieces on display mimic the ways that drug companies use color to elicit emotional responses from the public, which she likens to the placebo effect: 'If I see a red pill, I think, wow, that’s really going to be powerful. Or what happens if I look at a tiny blue pill? I think, yeah, that’s good, but two pills? That is even better.'"

Beverly Fishman (b. 1955, Philadelphia, PA) received her Master of Fine Arts in 1980 from Yale University and her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Philadelphia College of Art in 1977.

Fishman’s work has been the subject of recent solo exhibitions at The Contemporary Dayton, Dayton, OH; Kavi Gupta Gallery, Chicago, IL; Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, East Lansing, MI; Walter Storms Galerie, Munich, Germany; SOCO Gallery, Charlotte, NC; Gavlak Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Miles McEnery Gallery, New York, NY; Louis Buhl & Co., Detroit, MI; Library Street Collective, Detroit, MI; Ronchini Gallery, London, United Kingdom; Kravets Wehby Gallery, New York, NY; and CUE Art Foundation, New York, NY.

She is the recipient of the Anonymous Was A Woman Award; the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Hassam, Speicher, Betts, & Symons Purchase Award; a Guggenheim Fellowship in the Fine Arts; and a Fellowship Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
