  • "Refreshingly, Tom LaDuke, unlike some of his contemporaries, is willing to tackle the thorny topic of what his work is 'about.' Certainly, when the question arose in a recent interview, he was able to articulate a clear artistic mission, but, as we shall see, it is far more layered and nuanced than it might seem at first reading: 'My paintings are about location, a subjective moment in time and place. There is no edge, no entrance into my paintings – I try to fix moments in time, where something significant happened to me, or of an image that is important to me: to anchor this idea of self. But it is impossible to do – we are never the same person – we are always changing.'"

"The paintings produce an experience of distance and involvement: distance to the present, to the strict contemporaneity of viewing; involvement in the detours of time through a conversation with the spectral. The most obvious signs of this are in the contours of the floating images (never complete, always partial), which evoke shared memories (old master paintings, classic film, pop culture)."

" . . . it should come as no surprise that Tom LaDuke – whose practice centers on light, the essence of the cinematographic image – developed this body of paintings after seeing the reflection of his studio on the screen of a television playing a movie. His filmic borrowings are for the most part pivotal scenes from classic movies rooted in popular cultural memory (such as Alien, The Shining, The Elephant Man, etc.) but his interest in them goes deeper than their value as source motifs to paint: he seeks the ghost image."
