"Evans's special variety of intense, hyperbolic narrative is in full bloom in compressionscape, a large work in which layered clusters of various human and animal heads jostle one another for visual predominance... A stand-in for the artist, a self-portrait of sorts, the jaguar images recur in many of Evans’s works. The repetitions in this composition, as throughout his oeuvre, establish intricate networks of roadways, tunnels, corridors, conduits and alleyways, and even meandering forest pathways."

"In works such as tapescape2twofour and tapescape2008atdilg, the bands of color often resemble long strips of masking tape still attached to the canvases. The surfaces are basically flat, but subtle drop shadows here and there—among the tools in Evans's arsenal of subtle trompe l'oeil effects—lend many of the works in this exhibition a collage feel."

FRANKLIN EVANS (b. 1967 in Reno, NV) received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University in 1989 and his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1993. The artist has been on the faculty of Cooper Union School of Art in New York since 2017.
